The Handley Page Victor was the most technologically advanced of the force entered squadron service with 10 Squadron in April 1958.
Victors continued in RAF service until 1991 - their last years as tankers, a role which they began as far back as 1965. |
Victor varieties
- B.1 - original aircraft
- B.1A - second production batch including a number of enhancements such as adding a tail warning radar, and changes to pressure cabin and engines
- B.2 - a higher flying and faster enhancement. After the switch to low-level operations carried the Blue Steel missile
- BK.1 and BK.1A - converted mark 1 and 1A to become three-point air-to-air refuelling aircraft. Later designated K.1 and K.1A
- B.1A(K2P) - two-point refuelling aircraft which retained a bombing capability
- B(SR).2 - maritime/special reconnaissance variants converted from Blue Steel aircraft by addition of cameras and defensive countermeasure equipment
A transport variant, the HP.111 was offered but never developed.
The Victors took part in the Falklands War, both in reconnaissance and air-to-air refuelling roles. Their final operational service was as part of the 1991 Gulf War, again in the refuelling role.
