Some notable US examples from the Second World War and more recent times.

OP LUSTY Ap 1945 USAAF combined technical and post-hostilities intelligence objectives ( named for LUftwaffe Secret TechnologY). Began with the aim of exploiting captured German scientific documents, research facilities, and aircraft.
OP CROSSROADS 1946

US experiments on the military use of atomic bombs at Bikini Atoll in the Pacific Ocean. In July of that year, the U.S. Army and Navy detonated two nuclear bombs in Bikini Atoll lagoon (one above water and one under water) to test the effects of a nuclear attack on a naval fleet.

OP EL DORADO GOLD 16th Apr 1986

Series of US  military air strikes against ground targets inside Libya, intended to hit directly at the heart of Gaddafi’s ability to export terrorism, and to act as a deterrent to him. Strikes were flown by A-6 and F-111 bombers, the latter flying from US bases in the UK.

The attacks came after rising tension including Libyan SAM and maritime attacks on USN carrier task force exercising off the Libyan coast, and a bomb attack  in a discotheque in Berlin frequented by US service personnel.

OP RESTORE HOPE 3rd Dec 1992 to 4th May 1993

A joint and multinational operation, called UNITAF (unified task force), was a US-led, UN-sanctioned operation that included protection of humanitarian assistance and other peace-enforcement operations in famine-hit Somalia.

3rd Oct 1993 US Task Force Ranger came under heavy fire from Somali gunmen. This attack ultimately led to one of the worst military defeats of a US military force since the Vietnam war.

OP GOTHIC SERPENT Aug-Oct 1993

US military operation with the primary mission of capturing General Mohamed Farrah Aidid. The operation took place in Somalia. Part of the operation, a failed arrest, led to the Black Hawk Down incident, also know as the Battle of Mogadishu.

The battle resulted in the death of 18 American soldiers and another 79 wounded. Two Malaysian soldiers died and seven were wounded; two Pakistanis were also wounded. Somali deaths were not well recorded, but estimates put the number at 500-1000 Somali militia and civilians killed and 3000-4000 injured.

US-led coalition against variously international terrorism,  Osama bin Laden's Al Qaeda terrorist organization and the Taliban regime harbouring them in Afghanistan. Previously named OP INFINITE JUSTICE but renamed so as not to offend Moslems for whom  infinite justice resides only with God, or Allah.
OP RED DAWN Dec 13th 2003

Military operation conducted by the United States armed forces in the small town of ad-Dawr in Iraq, near Tikrit that resulted in the capture of the country's former president Saddam Hussein, and put to rest rumors of his death.

Conducted by the 1st Brigade Combat Team of the U.S. Army's 4th Infantry Division, the Raider Brigade. 600 soldiers participated, including cavalry, engineers, artillery, air support, and special forces, under the overall command of Colonel James Hickey of the 4th Infantry Division.
